Companion

3rd April 2025

I work on Mondays and Wednesdays. On Monday, I have my class on the second floor and on Wednesdays, I have it on the fourth floor. I prefer to take the stairs. Early in the morning, there is a long queue for the lift. To avoid the long waiting time. Besides, using the staircase is good cardio.

On Wednesdays, I meet a middle-aged man, also my colleague. Like me, he has his classes on Mondays and Wednesdays. On Monday, his class is on a different floor. But on Wednesdays, his class is next to mine, on the fourth floor. After 4 months, he noticed I did not take the lift. So, one Wednesday he thought of taking stairs, taking inspiration from me. I, on the other hand, climbed the stairs slower than my usual speed deliberately to give him company.
He thanked me for accompanying him after we reached the fourth floor.

This whole incident was unplanned and undecided, and happened candidly. Similarly, the companion is not only your life partner, your soulmate, or your husband/wife. They are someone who quietly makes an extra effort without making you feel like it's something they are doing for you. Also, you do the same thing differently, to keep their company. That's what companions do, accompany without any expectations or demands. Yes, life can be lived alone, it's not impossible. But a companion makes life easy and memorable. Hence, irrespective of age, gender, religion, and relationship, I would say that being assured in your mind that there is someone for you, that feeling itself is so soothing and reassuring.
