There is so much happening around as far as humor is concerned. And I have not been able to develop
a personal opinion on it. I know it is the opposite for folks these days. Because, everyone, and
EVERYONE has a POV about everything now. Hence, being a good listener, it's very natural for someone
like me to get lost in this world or be able to have a solid opinion about a particular incident. I
am aware of the happenings around me, but choose to keep myself away from it because I think it is
okay not to have an opinion on everything.
Handling a vibrant community on FB named Blah-Blah with my dear friend Sanjana's support, we have
faced incidents like these so many times. But there was this one particular post/meme that we
approved and one of the members kept writing essay-long comments on the post dragging in Admin's
intellect and everything. I was not available online, but Sanjana was there and she handled it very
gracefully. While we discussed it later, one thing she said got etched in my mind. "Humor has to be
fundamentally correct and people should stop searching for logic in it", how true is it? We are so
stimulated and loaded with information these days that even if it were clean humor, there would be
one person who is offended by it. That is when many people take advantage of the situation and humor
is suddenly given a political angle. Stand-up comedy and other shows that involve humor, preferably
watch/consume them without any agenda and only as entertainment. On the other hand, I feel creators
should also be a little sensible and draw a line to what extent it should go and try not to cross
it.
At different stages in life, I have come across jokes being made about me that did not feel funny. I
had no choice but to be a part of it and pass it with a smile.
"They say left-handed people are genius, you are left-handed, are you genius?"
- How would I know what is your level of genius?
"Is writing seriously a career?"
- Yes, it is. And those who don't take it seriously have some serious problems.
"I see you are too active on social media. If you have so much free time you should start earning
out of it. There are so many ways you can earn money."
- How I wish it were that easy!
There are so many reels and memes on social media that have retained my faith in good humor. I
appreciate their creators and respect the amount of talent that goes into making them, it's not as
easy as it looks.
But, humor has to be only funny, fundamentally and morally. Whenever an agenda gets attached to it,
then it starts losing its essence.
Not all jokes are funny.
