Samara has a question for Hurricanes of the Atlantic

09th April 2024

"In recent years, the deadliest Atlantic hurricane was Hurricane Mitch of 1998, with at least 11,374 deaths attributed to it, while the deadliest Atlantic hurricane was the Great Hurricane of 1780, which resulted in at least 22,000 fatalities. The most recent tropical cyclone with at least 1,000 fatalities was Storm Daniel in 2023, which killed at least 4,361 people" said the lady on National Geographic channel. 9-year-old Samara kept wondering what hurricane meant and why it happened.

"Papa, I have heard this word so many times when we were in the US. What does it mean?" she finally asked.

"Hurricane means strong winds, very strong", guilty Prakash answered.

This was a part of his work and he was researching the reasons behind hurricanes, so these terms would frequently be used in his conversations.

"So many people die, can't we stop it?"

"It's very powerful Beta. Its speed is several kilometres/second. Moreover, it's a natural phenomenon, can not be stopped manually."

"Who makes it?"

"The air and warm water in oceans give birth to it."

"The why it doesn't stop there only? Why does it come to land and claim so many lives?"

"Does wind stay in one place? Especially in wide open areas? Whichever direction the wind takes, the hurricane follows."

"But.."

"Samara, enough of hurricane questions today, I think you should sleep now."

"One last thing papa, please.."

"What is it now?"

"Did hurricane take mumma with itself?"

Upset Prakash nods his head.
"Will it drop her when it comes this time? I miss her, a lot."
Prakash looks in the opposite direction to wipe his tears and tries to distract Samara and put her to sleep.
