Sinkhole

22nd April 2024

Shivam used to write letters to his pen pal in Nepal. In his latest letter, Abhay informed him about a new address. Because of the sinkhole, he along with his family had to change his residence as the nuance of sinkholes was impacting their health. Shivam tried to search more about the same on the internet.

"Sinkholes have been used for centuries as disposal sites for various forms of waste. A consequence of this is the pollution of groundwater resources, with serious health implications in such areas.

Between November 2013 to 2017, more than 200 sinkholes were formed in the Armala area of Pokhara. The sinkholes were formed mostly in the paddy fields in the alluvial fan deposit. The sinkholes terrorized and displaced hundreds of residents.

In 2013, about 30 sinkholes were formed on both sides of Duhuni Khola. The holes had a diameter of about 10m and a depth of about 7m. Locals reported the flow of the muddy silty water outlet at the Kali Khola about one week before the first sinkhole appeared in November 2013. The sinkholes were filled up later."

"This is such a severe issue. Hope Abhay and his family safely shift to the new residence, soon", Shivam says to himself.
