Discipline

6th April 2026

It was just one of those tantrum days when my 10-year-old complained about how I don't cook a variety of food. To distract himself from the plate, he focused on the 54-inch screen that played an interview of his favourite cricketer, Virat Kohli. The host, Gaurav Kapoor, was praising Virat for his consistency and discipline, how he managed to keep his fitness an uncompromised factor in his cricketing journey. That's when Virat Kohli mentioned he had been eating the same food, following the same meal plan and workout routine for 8 years, and that is what has helped. He also mentioned indulging in his ultimate favourite Chole-Bhature from a particular place in Delhi, and then worked out for 3 hours straight to flush out all the calories. My son nibbled his bites quietly, listening to his idol.

"How can he eat the same food for 8 years, Mumma?"
"Well, he did the impossible and hence he achieved the unachievable." And after that day, at least for a month, there was no food tantrum.

How to remind ourselves constantly to be disciplined?
Discipline is boring, but the outcome is evident. It may not be visible instantly, but gradually and eventually it all feels like completing the picture by joining the dots.

So being disciplined means living a boring life, then?
No. Not at all. We Indians have a jugaad for everything. Like Virat Kohli stuffed chole bhature and flushed calories by working out for 3 hours, we need to find our jugaad.
