Homecoming

8th April 2025

A girl who planned to do engineering from a city away from her native place came across a significant change of heart moment when she started living in a hostel. Year 2008: My family was celebrating my small win of securing a seat in a reputed institute. Secretly, I was happy too. I have been that person who likes to explore and prepares herself well in advance for the same. New city, new friends, new experiences, I was excited to embrace everything. But, realization struck me a little late. I won't get to see my parents every day. I will be missing all the pampering from Maa and Baba. The house would become silent because my brother wouldn't have anyone to fight. With a heavy heart and teary eyes, I left the house.
And one habit never left me. The bus ticket price from the hostel to my native place then was 500 rs. My purse would always have a 500 rs note in the secret compartment. If things do not work well here, I was prepared to take a bus and go home. If I miss my family too much, without any delay I will catch the next bus and visit them. I used to keep that note subconsciously for years. That's what home is for, right? That feeling of knowing you have someone to fall back on, that feeling of being assured of having your set of people with you, supporting you, no matter what; That is home, right?

2022: I found a 500 rs note in my old purse's secret compartment and the note was wet after that.
