Navapashanam

27th October 2025

"Navapasham" by Nitya Neelakantan is an interesting blend, and we at Fabulous Four's Instagram Live discussion came to the conclusion that it is a mythological thriller. This book beautifully weaves the loves of two resilient women across two centuries, 1798 and 2018. The novel centers on the mythical elixir Navapashanam, said to possess the power to cure all ailments, but capable of causing catastrophe if it falls into the wrong hands.

The dual timeline narrative follows Mookambikai, the secret guardian of the Navapashanam, who faces threats and betrayal in colonial South India, and her great-grandniece Manimeghalai (Megha), who is drawn into the same web of intrigue centuries later. As Megha returns to her ancestral home, she confronts mysterious accidents, missing persons, and a growing danger linked to her family's legacy, which eventually draws her to safeguard the magical treasure.

Key themes in the book are resilience, legacy, the allure and dangers of mystical power, and the struggle between good and evil. Nitya also takes readers on an immersive ride to rich Tamil culture and evocative settings.

Nitya’s writing style effectively captures two distinct time periods with vivid imagery and atmospheric detail. The characters, especially Mookambikai and Megha, are resilient and fully developed, each battling personal and external forces with courage. The supporting cast—including mysterious antagonists and figures from Tamil literature—adds layers and richness to the story, while the pacing keeps the narrative engaging and suspenseful. The historical backdrop and references to significant places in Tamil Nadu enhance authenticity. The dual timeline approach keeps readers invested in unraveling family mysteries. The ending may feel a bit abrupt, but the overall adventure and suspense are satisfying. "Navapasham" stands out as a well-crafted combination of history and suspense, appealing to fans of both Indian historical fiction and thrillers. Nitya proves her storytelling skills by keeping readers invested from start to finish with impactful characters and a compelling plot. This book is recommended for anyone seeking a unique, culturally rich novel that explores themes of legacy and magical intrigue.
